WCW: Marie Curie

Marie Curie, born Maria Sklowdowski, was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1867. She was a physicist, Chemist, and a pioneer in radiation. Her parents were both educators, they pushed their daughters educations as well. Marie graduated first in her class from high school at the age of fifteen. She became a governess at seventeen to help support her sister pursue an education in France. Soon after, Marie went to college in France as well and lived in a small apartment. She went by Marie to seem more French. To afford her education and shelter, she often ate very poorly but her sacrifice was worth it as she focused on her studies. She met Pierre Curie in school, he was already a very bright man. They married in the summer of 1895. By 1898, Marie had come up with the term "radioactive" as they worked to discover Polonium (Named after Poland) and Radium. In 1903 she became the first women to earn a doctorate in Physics, in Europe. Marie and Pierre won a nobel prize together in 1903, and after Pierre's death, Marie earned another in 1911. IN 1934, Marie died of a blood disease usually developed from exposure to radiation. Pierre had fought for his wife's work to be recognized as her's, and in 1955 both their remains were moved to the Pantheon in France alongside some of France's most admirable citizens.
If it wasn't for this women's incredible drive, mind and discoveries, we wouldn't be where we are today. Thanks to her, we're so much more advanced and the world is better for her sacrifices to science.

Medical Man Crush Monday! Per Henrik Ling and Johann Georg Mezger; Who really pioneered the Swedish massage we know today?

Per Henrik Ling (PHK) was born in 1776, he was a Swedish Medical Gymnastics practitioner. He's known for promoting physical education in Sweden as well as wrongly credited with being the father of Swedish massage.  The start of Ling's career began in the early 1800's when PHK observed exercise and passive movements benefiting acute and chronic pain. PHK struggled with rheumatism and lung disease, he noticed physical exercise helping him manage his pain but that alone wasn't enough. He began pressing, stroking and kneading the body, he noticed these passive actions were showing change in a beneficial way! He had to share this with others, he went on to call it "Medical Gymnastics' and wanted to teach others to benefit themselves in the same way. He developed "suitable systemized exercises' that he felt would make the mind and body well. This would be the early developments of modern physiotherapy. Ling's passive movement's would later be kn...
